Holidays And Observance

Poker, a captivating family of card games, has players betting on the best hand according to the game's rules, much like a strategic ranking. From its humble beginnings with only 20 cards, it has evolved to be played with a standard deck or, in some cases, shorter packs of 32, 40, or 48 cards. The historical roots of poker remain a mystery, adding an element of intrigue. While many game scholars suggest the French game ‘poque’ and the Persian game ‘As-Nas’ as possible forerunners, the 1990s saw gaming historians like David Parlett challenge the direct descendant theory of As-Nas.

Poker has grown in popularity since the early 20th century, progressing from being primarily a leisure sport limited to small groups of enthusiasts to a widely popular activity for spectators and participants, including online platforms, with professional players and tournament prizes. In contrast to this poker variation, the seven-card stud first appeared in the mid-nineteenth century and was widely popularized by the U.S. military. Following World War II, it became a fixture in many casinos, and its popularity grew with the introduction of the World Series of Poker in the 1970s.

As the gambling scene evolved, Texas Hold ’em and other community card games emerged as dominant players. However, the advent of poker television truly revolutionized the game’s popularity. Particularly around the turn of the century, poker television became a powerful catalyst, sparking the poker boom a few years later. Today, poker has transcended borders and cultures, becoming a beloved pastime across the globe.
