Holidays And Observance
Bat Appreciation Day
Bat Conservation International (BCI) was established in 1982 by a
group of concerned scientists who recognized the importance of protecting bats.
Bats are crucial in controlling pests, creating rich fertilizers for
landowners, and pollinating fruit and flowers. BCI aims to conserve bats and
their habitats through education, conservation, and research.
Unfortunately, human activities such as deforestation, mining, and
irresponsible tourism have significantly reduced bat populations. Bats have
been understudied and misunderstood, often being perceived as disease spreaders
when they help keep the numbers of many pests down.
Between 2014 and 2018, the BCI identified 35 critically endangered
bat species that became a priority to protect. These species, including the
U.S., South America, and The Philippines, are found worldwide.
To support their cause and raise awareness of all that bats do for
the environment, the BCI introduced International Bat Appreciation Day to our
calendars. So now you know that bats have an essential role and that we should
be grateful for their presence.
