Holidays And Observance
Titanic Remembrance Day
The Titanic, constructed by Belfast shipbuilders Harland and Wolff
and designed by naval architect Thomas Andrews, was believed to be the fastest
ship in the world at its completion. It was an enormous and luxurious ocean
liner, spanning 883 feet from stern to bow, with a hull divided into 16
compartments that were presumed to be watertight.
On its maiden voyage across the Atlantic Ocean, the Titanic set
sail from Southampton, England, on April 10. Unfortunately, just before
midnight on April 14, it failed to change its course to avoid an iceberg and
struck it, causing at least five hull compartments to rupture and fill with
water. This ultimately led to the ship sinking after it broke in half.
Due to a shortage of lifeboats and inadequate emergency
procedures, more than 1,500 people perished in the sinking or died from
exposure to the frigid North Atlantic waters. The majority of the approximately
700 survivors were women and children. The tragedy claimed the lives of many
notable American and British citizens, including the renowned British
journalist William Thomas Stead and heirs to the Straus, Astor, and Guggenheim
fortunes.
The survivors lost everything they had on board and received
assistance from the public and charities worldwide. Several women's relief
committees provided clothing to women, and several private trains transported
survivors to their families free of charge.
