ANNIVERSARY OF THE BATTLE OF RIVAS

In 1856, an American mercenary named William Walker declared himself as the president of Nicaragua after a rigged election. He also planned to conquer more territories in Central America, which alarmed Nicaragua's neighboring countries. As a response, the president of Costa Rica, Juan Rafael Mora, declared war against Walker on March 1, 1857. In one of his famous speeches, Mora urged his fellow countrymen to take up arms, saying, "The time that I've been warning you has arrived."

Walker's army, led by the inexperienced Colonel Louis Schlessinger, crossed the border into Guanacaste, Costa Rica. Meanwhile, Costa Rica's army, commanded by Mora's brother Jose Joaquin Mora and his brother-in-law General Cañas, also moved in the same direction. On March 20, 1857, the Costa Ricans engaged and defeated Walker's forces. The latter retreated to the north, thinking that Mora's army was there, which gave the Costa Ricans access to the city of Rivas. However, when the Nicaraguan forces returned several days later, they gained some victories and even occupied the towers of the Rivas church to improve their firing range.

On April 11, General Cañas came up with a plan to set fire to a critical Nicaraguan stronghold. After several unsuccessful attempts by other soldiers, a brave 19-year-old named Juan Santamaria volunteered to do it. He only requested to care for his mother if he didn't make it. Though the enemy killed Santamaria, he succeeded in setting the structure on fire. His bravery and courage inspired Walker's forces to withdraw, significantly contributing to Costa Rica's victory. As a result, April 11 is now celebrated as Juan Santamaria Day in Costa Rica, with national parades and performances to honor Santamaria's heroism.
