Holidays And Observances
AMERIGO VESPUCCI DAY
Governor Nelson A. Rockefeller of New York declared March 9
a holiday in honor of Amerigo Vespucci's birth anniversary. Vespucci was one of
the first Europeans to travel to the Western Hemisphere and gave his name to
the two continents of America. Governor Rockefeller considered it essential to
celebrate Vespucci's contributions to American heritage and culture.
Vespucci's expedition 1501 landed him in modern-day Rio de
Janeiro, and he kept track of his travels in letters to his friend Lorenzo
Medici. His letters provide evidence of his discoveries and investigations.
Although many people credit Columbus with discovering
America, Vespucci affirmed the existence of a new land not part of Asia.
Governor Rockefeller urged the people of New York to participate in all
suitable observances of the occasion. Some have suggested replacing Columbus
Day with Vespucci Day to honor the person who founded our country.
