Holidays And Observance
MERMAID DAY
The concept of mermaids dates back to 1000 B.C. in Assyria (now Syria).
In their mythology, the fertility goddess Atargatis became a mermaid after
throwing herself into a lake to escape the grief and shame of killing her
lover. Mythology describes Atargatis as so beautiful that she couldn't fully
transform herself into a fish; instead, she retained her feminine shape and
beauty above the waist while her legs were completely transformed into a
fishtail. Greek mythology expanded on this story, including the tales of sea
nymphs (Nereids) and mermen (Tritons). The original Assyrian description of
mermaids was manifested in the Greek Sirens, later rewritten as
having wings like a bird rather than a tail like a fish. However, the
Romans kept the original description of mermaids as gorgeous, fairy-like women
with fishtails. Despite being universally accepted as fictional, several
historians recorded sightings of actual mermaids. Christopher Columbus and
English pirate Edward Teach (Blackbeard) were among those who reported seeing
mermaids. In modern times, the concept of mermaids has become deeply embedded
in global pop culture, from Hans Christian Andersen's fairytale "The
Little Mermaid" to its regular depictions in films and television.
