Holidays And Observances

Save the Florida Panther Day

1816 Lorenz Oken classified all spotted big cats into the genus Panthera. In 1916, Reginald Pocock further categorized the genus by introducing lions, tigers, leopards, and jaguars based on their unique characteristics.

The main reason behind the endangerment of panthers is the loss of their natural habitat. With the growing human population and expanding industries, forests are being cleared, leaving many panthers without a home. Hunting and poaching are also significant threats to the lives of panthers. In 2016, an estimated 35 panthers were killed, with 15 of them being hit by cars on the highway near Alligator Alley. However, the Florida Department of Transportation (F.D.O.T.) is taking steps to help panthers by fencing the area from the Naples tollbooth to the Florida Panther National Wildlife Refuge, which spans about nine miles. In 2015, the Florida Fish and Wildlife Conservation Commission (F.W.C.) reported an increase in the panther population from 180 to 230. Also, it noted the discovery of a female panther near the Caloosahatchee River, which is a positive sign that conservation efforts are working.

On Save the Florida Panther Day, the Florida Panther National Wildlife Refuge encourages citizens to participate in efforts to save panthers. They organize guided tours, camps, and safaris, and people can also support the Panther Citizens Assistance Taskforce (P.C.A.T.) volunteers and contribute to the ongoing campaign. Even those who don't live in Florida can raise awareness about the importance of preserving panthers and their habitat.
