Holidays And Observances
Buzzards Day
In 1957, a Cleveland Metroparks patrolman named Walter Nawalaniec
informed Robert Bordner of the Cleveland Press and local historian Miss Eunice
Morton of Richfield that he observed buzzards returning on the same day each year after their
migration. He was thrilled to note that they returned on the
same calendar date every year, including leap years.
That year, almost 9,000 visitors came to see the birds return, and
since then, Ohio has received thousands of bird lovers who visit to witness the
buzzards' return. As a result, Buzzards Day was created, and the Chamber of
Commerce decided to celebrate the occasion by welcoming the birds with a
traditional American breakfast of sausages and pancakes.
Buzzards are fascinating birds with unique qualities not found in
other scavengers. They vocalize throughout the year, and in the U.S., the term
"buzzards" refers to turkey vultures, which are part of the New World
vultures. In other parts of the world, buzzards refer to Old World Vultures. In
North America, the term can also refer to hawks or buzzard hawks.
