Holidays And Observances

K-9 Veterans Day

Joe White, a Vietnam War veteran from Jacksonville, Florida, created K-9 Veterans Day. As a former dog handler in the military, he witnessed firsthand the bravery and dedication of working dogs in service. He was also disturbed by the now-abolished practice of euthanizing these dogs at the end of their service. He proposed a holiday dedicated to them to raise awareness and honor the sacrifices of military working dogs.

Military working dogs have a long history dating back to ancient times. The Greeks and Romans used the Cane Corso, a monstrous dog, as a guard dog. Meanwhile, the Persians used leaner breeds like the Saluki for hunting wild game, and Mongolians had massive canine sentries in their armies, ancestors of the modern-day Tibetan Mastiff. Dogs were also used in World War I as messengers, supply haulers, and for locating wounded soldiers. In World War II, they acted as scouts, guards, and rescuers. The Vietnam War marked the largest deployment of dogs in U.S. military history, with canines proving invaluable in the jungle environment. Unfortunately, less than 200 military working dogs returned home from the original 20,000 deployed. Today, working dogs detect explosives and narcotics and have much better welfare due to the military learning from past mistakes.
