Holidays And Observances

Plant A Flower Day

Flowers have had a transformative impact on the earth since their appearance over 145 million years ago in the Cretaceous period. Before their arrival, ferns and conifers were the dominant plant species, resulting in a sea of green. However, with the help of insects and dinosaurs, flowers diversified rapidly, leading to the birth of several plant families we know today.

Flowering plants are essential to survival, providing humans and animals with the necessary sustenance. Beyond their practical applications, flowers have an uplifting quality that captures the imagination. Although they only bloom briefly, usually in spring or early summer, the beauty of flowers in full bloom is incomparable. This transient beauty has inspired the symbolic meanings of flowers across various world cultures.

Throughout history, flowers have retained certain myths and symbolism. Due to their fragility, they have come to represent death or new life and have also been used to represent gods and goddesses. However, flowers in full bloom are universally recognized as a symbol of joy.

In Europe, flowers became a way to represent people's feelings during the late 1800s. Communicating through flower arrangements helped to articulate the unsaid, and codebooks were created to decipher the language of flowers. For example, a field clover meant "When can I see you again?" while a red rose petal meant "Yes." Green flowers signified that the receiver's heart was as hard as a stone!

Although the days of complex flower codes may be long gone, flowers continue to bring joy and meaning to our lives. We may never know who created National Plant A Flower Day, but the question isn't "why?" - it's "why not?"
