Holiday Spotlight
National Gourmet Coffee Day
I can't pinpoint the
specific origin of coffee. Its past is enshrouded in legend and theory, but one
thing I'm sure of is that it's been around for centuries. I believe the
ancestors of today's Oromo people in Ethiopia's Jimma region were the first to
recognize the coffee plant's energizing power. However, I don't have definitive
evidence that coffee was grown before the 15th century or even where it was
first cultivated.
I've learned that
either coffee consumption or knowledge of the coffee tree existed in Yemeni
Sufi monasteries as early as the 16th century, quickly spreading to Mecca and
Medina. By the 16th century, coffee had reached the Middle East, South India
(Karnataka), Persia, Turkey, and northern Africa. It expanded throughout the
Balkans, Italy, Europe, and Southeast Asia. With its ability to provide instant
energy, coffee has since conquered various regions of the world and won many
hearts. I've seen how a simple cup of coffee has evolved to suit different
tastes and purposes. From Frappuccino and cold brews to espresso shots and even
espresso martinis, I can now find coffee anywhere and in any form I like.
This is the story of
how gourmet coffee came into existence. Gourmet coffee is made from 100%
Arabica beans. These beans require a cool subtropical climate at a higher
altitude to thrive and provide smooth, powerful, and aromatic brews that
regular beans can't match. As a coffee enthusiast, I believe it's a must-try
because it's more luxurious than typical coffee in terms of taste, production,
and intensity. National Gourmet Coffee Day celebrates this caffeine celebrity,
and I wholeheartedly applaud it!
