Holidays and Observances
Grandma Moses Day: A Late-Blooming Artistic Icon
Born Anna Mary Robertson in 1860, Grandma Moses became a household name in the art world. However, when she married Thomas Moses in 1887 and reached her 70s, her artistic journey truly began. Arthritis forced her to abandon her embroidery, but it opened the door to her second act as a painter.
Her best-known works are a testament to her self-taught talent. Her paintings vividly captured scenes from her upbringing in rural America, portraying peaceful farmsteads and idyllic country life. This style, characterized as primitive, resonated with audiences, and her popularity soared.
In 1960, then-New York Governor Nelson Rockefeller declared September 7 Grandma Moses Day in honor of her 100th birthday. Her influence extended beyond her art, inspiring generations to pursue their passions regardless of age. She shattered attendance records at exhibitions in the 1950s and even graced the cover of LIFE magazine when she turned 100.
Her impact stretched far and wide. Art collector Louis Caldor's discovery of her paintings at a local drugstore launched her career, as her works gained recognition across Europe and North America. Her pictures, often depicting rural nostalgia, were adopted on Christmas cards in 1946, further expanding her reach.
Today, we celebrate Grandma Moses as an artistic icon and a symbol of resilience and the timeless pursuit of creative expression, no matter when one embarks on that journey.
