Holidays and Observances
VJ Day: The End of the Struggle
In the mid-20th century, the phrase "ultimate sacrifice" carried a profound and personal meaning, especially during World War II, which claimed far more lives than the First World War. The war's enormous death toll of 50-80 million people, around three percent of the world's population, made it a monumental event. V-J Day celebrations were filled with spontaneous joy, although some became chaotic and deadly. Despite this, the nation and the Western world were united in their belief that good had triumphed over evil.
Today, World War II remains a common theme in History Channel programs, Hollywood films, and popular literature. Most people understand events like the attack on Pearl Harbor, the American landing in Europe, and the fight against the Nazis. Iconic images from that era, such as the sailor kissing a Navy nurse in Times Square, continue to be memorable.
Celebrating V-J Day on September 2 should not be taken lightly, considering the actual costs of war. Nevertheless, it serves as a source of positive pride and a reminder of the relief brought by the war's end, passed down through generations.
