Events & Observances
World Friendship Day
Friendship Day has a fascinating history that dates to 1958 when Dr. Ramon Artemio Bracho proposed the idea of a Global Friendship Day during a dinner with friends in Paraguay. This gathering led to the World Friendship Crusade, a foundation dedicated to promoting friendship and fellowship among all individuals, regardless of race, color, or religion.
Initially celebrated on 30th July each year in Paraguay, Friendship Day gained international attention over time. In 1998, Nane Annan, the wife of former UN Secretary-General Kofi Annan, named Winnie the Pooh as the world's Ambassador of Friendship at the United Nations, further emphasizing the significance of friendship on a global scale.
The United Nations was also involved in recognizing the importance of friendship. After years of lobbying by the World Friendship Crusade, the UN General Assembly designated 30th July as the International Day of Friendship in 2011. This decision aimed to encourage member states to observe the day through various activities that raise awareness about friendship and promote understanding among diverse communities.
Although the original date of Friendship Day was 2nd August, it was moved to 7th August due to de-synchronization in the United States. The celebration of Friendship Day has now spread to several countries around the world, signifying the universal importance of this special bond between friends.
